Oreti Estate is part of the Harries family story, which began in Kenya over 100 years ago. In 1904, Allen Charles Harries established Karamaini Estate near Thika, laying the foundations for what would become a multi-generational coffee farming business. Today, the estates are managed by 5th generation family member Boyce Harries.

Founded in 1946 and named after a beach in New Zealand, Oreti Estate quickly gained a reputation for producing exceptional coffee.

The farm is particularly known for cultivating the rare SL14 variety, a coffee prized for its cup quality but rarely grown today due to its vulnerability to disease.

Alongside SL14, Oreti also grows the well-known SL28 variety. The Harries family has worked hard to preserve these historic Kenyan cultivars, making Oreti one of the few estates where SL14 continues to thrive.

People are at the heart of the estate. Around 40 full-time staff work and live on the farm, many from families that have been employed there for generations.

During harvest, the workforce grows to more than 300 local workers. The estate also supports the wider community through educational initiatives and vocational training opportunities.

The combination of the rare SL14 variety, careful farming practices and generations of expertise creates a coffee that truly stands out.

Sustainability is equally important. Oreti maintains 80 hectares of indigenous forest to help protect biodiversity and soil health. By combining generations of farming knowledge with a commitment to quality and community, Oreti Estate continues to produce some of Kenya’s most distinctive coffees.
